Liquid nitrogen itself is non-flammable and non-explosive. However, if the tank is hermetically sealed or its pressure relief valve fails, the liquid nitrogen will vaporize and expand to about 700 times its original volume. This pressure buildup can cause the tank to rupture. Always use certified containers with functional pressure relief devices and never seal the tank mouth.
What are the dangers of contact? How to protect?
Liquid nitrogen is extremely cold (-196°C / -321°F). Skin contact can cause severe cold burns or frostbite. Always wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including cryogenic gloves, safety goggles/face shield, a long-sleeved lab coat, and pants that cover your ankles.
How to fill liquid nitrogen correctly?
Pre-cooling (New/Idle Tanks): For new or long-unused tanks, first slowly add a small amount of LN2 (about 1/10 of capacity) to pre-cool the inner tank. Wait until the boiling subsides before filling completely.- Slow Filling: Use a dedicated funnel and pour slowly along the inner wall to prevent splashing.- Fill Limit: Do not fill beyond 80%-90% of total capacity, and ensure the liquid level does not touch the neck tube. Sufficient space must be left for liquid expansion and gas evaporation.
What should I note when accessing samples?
Quick Operation: Minimize lid-open time, ideally under 30 seconds per access, to reduce nitrogen loss and temperature fluctuation.- Gentle Handling: Use baskets to raise/lower samples steadily. After removal, pause briefly to let residual LN2 drip off.
