| Product Overview

The DQS15C is a cryogenic diverter ball valve engineered for multi-port flow routing in deep-cryogenic systems operating from −196°C to +85°C. Although commonly referenced as a "three-way" switching device in cryogenic manifolds, this model is a five-way diverter (5-Way) ball valve: its ball carries multiple internal passages that, with a simple quarter-turn (90°) rotation of the manual handwheel, redirect the cryogenic flow from the inlet to different outlet ports—enabling flow to be diverted, blended, or isolated among several branches of a low-temperature distribution system.

The valve is built for the full industrial gas spectrum—LOX (liquid oxygen), LIN (liquid nitrogen), LAr (liquid argon), and LNG (liquefied natural gas)—and is rated for working pressures up to 600 psig (41.37 bar). Its construction pairs a stainless steel body with PCTFE seat rings and a brass seat, a material combination that delivers structural strength, corrosion resistance, and the conformable, low-leakage sealing required at −196°C where metal-to-metal seats suffer differential thermal contraction. The graphite gland packing further maintains a reliable stem seal under extreme thermal cycling.

Three design features matter most in field service. First, the anti blow-out stem is mechanically retained so the stem cannot be ejected by internal pressure—a critical safety consideration, since a blown-out stem on a pressurized cryogenic line would release a violent, hazardous jet of liquefied gas. Second, the full bore (full port) flow path keeps the flow area through the ball equal to the line size, minimizing pressure drop and maximizing flow rate for cryogenic transfer. Third, the NPT tapered pipe thread connections provide a tool-standard, leak-tight interface that installs directly into existing pipework. The quarter-turn manual operation gives fast, unambiguous open/close and switching action—a full 90° travel for each position change—with no power, air, or signal required, which is ideal for field operation, emergency isolation, and maintenance.

Manufactured in compliance with CGA G-4.1 oxygen service requirements, the DQS15C is also qualified for oxygen and medical oxygen transfer applications where material compatibility, cleanliness, and ignition safety are critical. Its compact, symmetrical body with long lever handle is designed for reliable, repeatable flow routing in cryogenic skids, manifolds, portable tanks, and filling stations.

| Working Principle

A cryogenic diverter ball valve is a multi-port rotary control device. Its core component is a ball with internal passages, mounted on a stem and sealed between seat rings. Rotating the stem rotates the ball; rotating the ball aligns different passages with different ports, switching the flow path. The DQS15C uses a quarter-turn (90°) actuation: each rotation of the manual handwheel by 90° moves the ball between defined positions, giving fast, repeatable, and visually verifiable switching.

The Multi-Port (Diverter) Principle:

Unlike a simple two-port on/off ball valve, the DQS15C's ball contains several internal passages arranged so that different rotational positions connect the common inlet to different outlets. In the 5-way diverter configuration, the ball can route the incoming cryogenic flow to a selected outlet port, isolate it, or combine passages as designed—allowing one source of liquid to be distributed to several destinations, or several sources to be selected to one destination, from a single valve. This is the essence of the "three-way / multi-way switching" principle: one compact valve replaces multiple two-way valves, reducing leaks, space, and cost in cryogenic manifolds.

Flow Position — Aligned Passages and Full Bore Flow:

When the handwheel is rotated to a selected position, the ball's passage aligns with the chosen inlet and outlet ports, and the valve is open. The full bore (full port) design keeps the flow area equal to the line size, so the liquid passes through with minimal turbulence and pressure drop—important for high-flow cryogenic transfer where throttling would cause flashing and pressure loss. The PCTFE seat rings and brass seat press against the ball surface, forming the tight, low-leakage seal around the flow path that keeps the closed ports dry and leak-free.

Closed / Isolated Position — Passages Turned Away:

When the ball is rotated 90° (or to the isolating position), the passage through the ball turns away from the open ports, and the solid face of the ball presents itself to the flow. The seat rings seal against the ball's spherical surface, blocking flow through the closed ports while the selected port remains open—or, in the fully closed position, isolating the entire valve. This gives the operator both flow diversion and isolation capability from a single handwheel.

Quarter-Turn Manual Operation and Visual Indication:

The valve is operated manually: rotating the top yellow handwheel through 90° moves the ball between positions. The long lever provides mechanical advantage, and its orientation gives a clear visual indication of the flow path—the operator can see at a glance whether the valve is open, closed, or which branch is selected. The anti blow-out stem keeps the stem mechanically retained within the body under all operating pressures, preventing hazardous stem ejection. The graphite gland packing seals the stem where it exits the body, accommodating the thermal cycling of cryogenic service while maintaining a leak-free seal from −196°C to +85°C.

Leak-Proof Sealing at Cryogenic Temperature:

At −196°C, metal components contract at different rates, which is why the valve relies on PCTFE (a fluoropolymer with excellent low-temperature properties) for its seat rings: PCTFE remains resilient and conformable at cryogenic temperatures, pressing tightly against the ball to seal even when the metal dimensions shift. The brass seat provides a stable, machined seating surface. Together they maintain the leak-tight switching that cryogenic manifolds require.

Comment & FAQ

1:   What is a cryogenic diverter ball valve and how does it differ from a regular ball valve?

A: A cryogenic diverter ball valve is a multi-port rotary valve used to route cryogenic fluid—such as LOX, LIN, LAr, or LNG—between multiple branches of a distribution system. The key difference from a regular two-port ball valve is the ball's internal passage arrangement: where a regular ball valve has a simple straight-through passage for open/close, a diverter ball (as in the DQS15C) has multiple passages so that rotating the ball by 90° redirects flow from the common inlet to a selected outlet port. This lets one valve perform flow switching, diversion, or isolation that would otherwise require several two-way valves. The DQS15C is a 5-way diverter, while a conventional "three-way" valve uses the same principle with a T- or L-port ball.

2.   What does "5-Way diverter" mean? Isn't this a three-way valve?

A: Both descriptions refer to the same family of multi-port switching valves, differing only in the number of connection ports and the ball's passage pattern. A conventional three-way valve has one inlet and two outlets (or the reverse) and routes flow between three ports using a T- or L-port ball. The 5-way diverter (DQS15C) has five connection ports and a ball with several internal passages, allowing the incoming flow to be routed to a wider selection of outlets from a single valve. In cryogenic manifolds both are commonly called "three-way / diverter" switching devices, but the DQS15C's five-port design gives more routing flexibility—more destinations served, or more sources selectable—from one compact, quarter-turn valve.

3.  What are the typical applications of the DQS15C?

A: Typical applications include: flow diversion in cryogenic filling and vaporizing systems (e.g., directing LNG or liquid nitrogen to a selected tank or vaporizer); outlet selection on portable cryogenic tanks and dewars—using the diverter to route liquid or vapor as needed; cryogenic manifold flow routing, where one valve replaces multiple two-way valves to distribute a single source to several destinations; and oxygen/medical oxygen transfer lines, thanks to its CGA G-4.1 compliance. In short, any cryogenic system that needs to switch, divert, or isolate flow among several branches under a single operator action—from −196°C to +85°C and up to 600 psig—is a fit for this valve.

4.   What is an anti blow-out stem and why is it critical in cryogenic service?

A:  An anti blow-out stem is a stem whose shoulder is mechanically trapped inside the valve body, so the internal pressure cannot push the stem out of the valve. In cryogenic service this is critical because the media is a liquefied gas under high pressure: a conventional stem held only by a gland can be ejected if the gland loosens under thermal cycling or vibration, releasing a violent jet of liquid that flashes to gas and can cause severe injury, equipment damage, and fire hazards. The DQS15C's stem is retained by design, and the graphite gland packing maintains the external seal while the anti blow-out feature guarantees the stem stays in place even if the packing is compromised. This is a fundamental safety requirement for pressurized cryogenic and oxygen service.

5.   What does "full bore / full port" mean and why does it matter?

A: Full bore (also called full port) means the flow area through the ball and valve is equal to the nominal size of the connecting line—there is no reduced-diameter throat inside the valve. This matters for cryogenic transfer for three reasons: (1) low pressure drop—the fluid passes through with minimal resistance, preserving system pressure; (2) high flow rate—no bottleneck, so the maximum transfer rate is achieved; and (3) reduced flashing and turbulence—cryogenic liquids are near their boiling point, and throttling at a reduced port causes flashing (rapid vaporization) and pressure loss that reduce transfer efficiency. A full-bore diverter keeps the flow path clean and unrestricted, which is why it is preferred for high-flow LOX, LIN, and LNG transfer service.

6.    Why PCTFE seat rings and brass seat?

A: At −196°C, metal components contract at different rates, so a hard, unyielding seal material would leak as the dimensions shift. PCTFE (polychlorotrifluoroethylene) is a fluoropolymer that remains resilient and conformable at cryogenic temperatures: it presses tightly against the ball surface to maintain a leak-tight seal even when the metal parts contract and the clearances change. This is why PCTFE (rather than standard elastomers, which become brittle at −196°C) is used for the seat rings. The brass seat provides a stable, machined, dimensionally accurate seating surface that holds the PCTFE ring and mates reliably with the stainless ball. Together they deliver the low-leakage, repeatable switching that cryogenic manifolds demand, across the full −196°C to +85°C range.
